At Pascoe Vale South Primary School, we believe mathematics is integral to participation in modern society and supports success at school and beyond. We aim for students become Mathematical thinkers and to understand that mathematics is part of their daily life.

Our approach to teaching maths incorporates the principles of the Department of Education FISO framework and High Impact Teaching Strategies. Our approach to teaching Mathematics includes:

• A positive mindset approach to mathematics, that teachers all students that they are capable learners.
• Targeted teaching relevant to the needs of students, according to the curriculum standards.

• Extensive, school wide ongoing assessment and monitoring of the development of all students. Assessment informs our focus on continuous improvement, tailored program development and delivery to meet student needs
• A whole school scope and sequence document based on best practice approaches in core areas of mathematics study including place value, number operations and problem solving.
• Extensive use of concrete manipulatives engage students and support them in their learning.
• Explicit, daily teaching of numeracy utilising a school wide lesson model based on the proficiencies: fluency, reasoning, understanding and problem solving.
• Students practise and extend skills through problem solving and open ended tasks.
• Students are encouraged to solve problems efficiently by using a range of strategies, such as finding a pattern.
• Whole class modelling and explanations of mathematical processes to promote understanding
• Small group instruction, allowing for differentiated learning, balanced with whole class, partner and individual learning opportunities

We are constantly developing and refining our instructional practices used in every day teaching, which will support stronger outcomes in numeracy.

MATHLETICS

Pascoe Vale South PS has student access for Mathletics to support with the teaching and learning of numeracy. This program is an online program, which supports children to put into practice the core mathematical skills they need for success at school. The one-on-one learning activities are designed to motivate children to learn through colourful animation, exciting rewards and targets learning to individual needs. Children may be assigned to complete tasks in the classroom or at home.
